PER DIEM COURT INTERPRETER LANGUAGE SCREENING APPLICATION

If you want to be a Per Diem Court Interpreter and join the NYS Unified Court System’s Per Diem Interpreter Registry, complete the online application. After submitting the application, you will receive a confirmation email about the language skills screening process.

Requirements to Complete an Application

  • You must have a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • You must have a social security number or a tax identification number to complete the online application. If you do not have this information, and you want to apply to be a court interpreter, please email OLAPerDiemTest@nycourts.gov.
  • If you did not pass the multiple-choice exam, you must wait six months to apply to take the exam again.
  • If you already passed the NYS Unified Court System’s Written Test for English Language Proficiency or the written portion of the Spanish exam, please do not submit another online Language Skills Screening Application.
  • If you already passed the NYS Unified Court System’s Written Test for English Language Proficiency or the written portion of the Spanish exam and, are interested in becoming registered in an additional language, please email OLAPerDiemTest@nycourts.gov, for more information.

Apply for Reciprocity or Written Exam Waiver
To apply for reciprocity or a written exam waiver, read the provisions prior to completing the online application. Select Start Application to complete the online application. The application will ask you to upload credentials as part of the language skills screening process. Please have the documents available.

Apply to join our registry as a Sign Language Interpreter
If you are a Sign Language interpreter and want to join our registry, please select Start Application to complete the online application and attach the requested documents. The New York State Unified Court System recognizes the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) as the credentialing authority for American Sign Language interpreters. Interpreters holding this credential may be placed on the NYS Unified Court System’s Registry of Per Diem Court Interpreters and provide court interpreting services. A criminal background investigation is required. The application will ask you to upload credentials as part of the language skills screening process. Please have the documents available.
